Acknowledges receipt of letter; informs Markham of car crash of wife and daughter who are seriously hurt; had no time therefore to revise his verses but will hopefully do so in September.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
